Ernestine Grigsby Recollections of Ida Shaw Martin Interview, January 1984

Ernestine Block Grigsby, University of Colorado Boulder, shares her recollections of Tri Delta Founder Sarah Ida Shaw Martin, Boston University. Ernestine discusses what little is known about Ida's marriage and personal life, the illness she experienced towards the end of her life, and the role she played in the writing of ritual and constitutions and bylaws for many fraternities and sororities as well as the sorority handbook. She also notes Ida's fondness for emeralds, fine jewelry, and pretty clothing and recalls Ida's lifelong attachment to Tri Delta and recounts her attendance at Ida's funeral.

Ernestine Grigsby's Recollections Interview, August 1982

Past President Ernestine Block Grigsby, University of Colorado Boulder, first speaks about recruitment and chapter life during her collegiate years, including a visit from R. Louise Fitch, Knox College, World War I, and the Spanish flu pandemic. She then discusses her experiences visiting chapters as a deputy of Theta Province, attending her first Tri Delta Convention in 1922, and developing the National Panhellenic Conference. Ernestine also relates stories about Founder Sarah Ida Shaw Martin, Boston University, and the early days of Tri Delta and shares memories of attending Sarah's funeral.

Frances McDonald Past President Interview, June 1974

Past President Frances Priddy McDonald, University of Missouri, speaks to Gloria Hoffman Snyder, University of Texas, about her recollections of presiding over conventions as president and attending conventions as a child with her mother Bessie Leach Priddy, Adrian College, her memories of early Tri Delta leaders like her mother, Amy Olgen Parmelee, Northwestern University, and R. Louise Fitch, Knox College, and the 1921 Tri Delta Europe Tour. She reflects fondly on her memories of some of the Tri Deltas she served with in leadership, including Ernestine Block Grigsby, University of Colorado Boulder, Florence Spear Grant, University of Minnesota, Gretchen Borland Davies, University of Washington, Dorothy Gaines Roeske, University of Illinois at Urbana, Mary E. Bake, University of Cincinnati, Kathleen Davis Nye, University of Iowa, and Ruth McDowell Kinnard, University of Alabama. Frances also shares her thoughts on the importance of strong chapter leadership and alumnae-collegian relations for chapter development and the importance of Tri Delta friendship, and recalls her experience serving as editor of The Trident.

Gretchen Davis Past President Interview, May 1981

Gretchen Borland Davies, University of Washington, speaks to Bette McGillivray Euse, University of Minnesota, recounting her time serving as president of Tri Delta and describing the celebration of Tri Delta's 50th Anniversary at the 1938 Convention in Swampscott, Massachusetts. She describes some of the changes Tri Delta underwent during her leadership, including the creation of the traveling secretary program and the move to the 2108 Chicago Daily News Building Executive Office in Chicago, Illinois. Gretchen also recounts being in Washington, D.C. at the outbreak of World War II and being in attendance when President Franklin Roosevelt formally declared war on Japan.

Helen Notesteen Past President Interview, March 23, 1982

Helen Russell Notesteen, University of Minnesota, speaks to Jean Hunt Gaines, University of California, Los Angeles, to share recollections of her time as president and her experiences in service to Tri Delta as Province Deputy and Fraternity Collegiate Secretary. She reflects fondly on Tri Deltas who served with her on the Executive Board, discusses their work to implement changes required by amendments made to the Tri Delta Constitution, and describes her efforts on extension and the improvement of new member education. Helen concludes by discussing her time as adviser for Phi Beta Chapter at the University of Arizona and her efforts to create a library of books by Tri Delta authors.

Jeanne Grimes Past President Interview, June 12, 1985

Jeanne Johnston Phillips, Southern Methodist University, speaks to Gloria Hoffman Snyder, University of Texas, about her service to Tri Delta, beginning in 1956 on the House Corporation for Theta Kappa Chapter at Southern Methodist University, then later as a scholarship adviser, alumnae adviser, district president, national chairman of pledge training, fraternity associate director of collegiate chapters west from 1970-1972, collegiate vice president from 1972-1976, and president from 1976-1980. She shares recollections of the Tri Deltas she served with in leadership and discusses the value of chapter visits for both fraternity officers and collegians. Jeanne also discusses different initiatives to support chapters, the liberalization of Tri Delta's recommendation and recruitment policies, changes to the badge design to make badges more affordable, and the decision to increase collegiate and alumnae member dues.

Kathleen Nye Past President Interview, June 23, 1982

Kathleen Davis Nye, University of Iowa, speaks to Margaret Paddock Haller, Cornell University, about her Tri Delta career, beginning with her time as traveling secretary from 1943-1945, including a time she traveled on a troop train during World War II, then later serving as fraternity chairman of academic standards, district president of Indiana, and fraternity collegiate vice president before becoming president from 1968-1972. She discusses the expansion of career opportunities for women, shares her recollections of serving under President Susan White Perry, Vanderbilt University, and the decision to close Alpha Upsilon Chapter at Colby College, as well as the Executive Board's reaction to the recruitment of the first African American member by Delta Upsilon Chapter at Ohio Wesleyan University. Kathleen also speaks fondly of the Tri Deltas who served with her on Executive Board during her presidency, discusses the challenges of recruitment, membership selection, and discrimination in the 1960s, recounts the move of the Tri Delta Executive Office to Arlington, Texas, and recalls the 1970 Convention in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Margaret Paddock Haller, Cornell University, speaks to Virginia Nicholas Provost, College of William & Mary, about her service to Tri Delta as an adviser to Alpha Tau Chapter at Carnegie Mellon University, as district president from 1944-1948, as fraternity director from 1948-1956, as fraternity collegiate vice president from 1956-1958, and president from 1958-1962. She praises the Tri Deltas who served under her on the Executive Board and describes their accomplishments, including overseeing the expansion of the Executive Board following amendments to the Tri Delta Constitution, the trademarking of Tri Delta insignia, and the restoration of the field secretary program. She describes the impact of World War II on Tri Delta, attending the 1940 and 1950 Conventions on Mackinac Island, Michigan, her experiences attending chapter installations, and the creation of the Crescent Fund. Mary Kay Baker Past President Interview, February 24, 1982

Ruth Kinnard Past President Interview

Ruth McDowell Kinnard, University of Alabama, speaks to L. Virginia Nicholas Provost, College of William & Mary, about her experiences as a collegian in Delta Mu Chapter at the University of Alabama, serving as traveling secretary from 1940-1942, fraternity associate director from 1946-1948, fraternity collegiate secretary from 1948-1952, and fraternity president from 1952-1956. She also discusses her family life, her experiences attending conventions, and her fond memories of working closely with Mary K.
